Homeschooled students can now enroll in CCS home study program

Coastal Christian School now offers a home study pilot program for students in all grades (K-12).

The program, called PSP for Private School Study Program, allows students to select from a number of choices for education while being enrolled in Coastal Christian School. Since these students are covered by the school’s affidavit, homeschooling parents can avoid potential legal problems that could be a concern for other homeschooling families who are pursuing education on their own.

In addition to giving students the opportunity to attend up to four classes at CCS and participate in school sports, PSP enrollees can choose from these options: music lessons, choir participation, curriculum rental, SAT/PSAT preparation and testing, college counseling, work study, recordkeeping assistance, one-on-one tutoring, and weekly consultation.

Sally Williamson, a mother of five grown children, is coordinating the PSP program. She earned two California state teaching credentials and has worked as a teacher in both public and private schools. Williamson homeschooled her own children for portions of their education.

“The PSP program at Coastal Christian School is not a one-size-fits-all approach to school,” said Williamson. “It allows parents to customize their child’s education. This program gives parents help with their children and curriculum so they are not alone; they have someone to walk beside them.”

Williamson said the PSP program could greatly increase homeschooling success. In one instance, the parent may choose to have her monitor the progress of the student. Mrs. Williamson could then function as the 'accountability person' who tests the child and checks his or her weekly progress. Another parent may opt to get tutoring for a freshman two hours a week in a difficult subject such as algebra. Thus some of the great hurdles parent and teachers face can be overcome.

“I love teaching,” said Williamson. “It energizes me to work with the students.”
