CCS Varsity Basketball Finishes the Season in 4th Place -- Great Job, Conquerors!
Coastal Christian's Varsity Basketball Head Coach Russ Garrison took some time to talk with us about his team this year.

First of all, we asked Coach Garrison to describe each of his players.

Stephen Henry: Senior, 6'5"
Position: Forward
Defensive Strengths: Shot-blocking
Offensive Strengths: Rebounding and second-chance points
Stephen averages almost 7 rebounds per game, and is 3rd in the league in blocked shots.

Stephen Power: Senior, 6'3"
Position: Center
Defensive Strengths: Rebounding
Offensive Strengths: Court vision and versatility
Stephen averages almost 11 points per game, with a 97% field goal percentage.

Zach Schultz: Senior, 6'2"
Position: Guard/Forward
Defensive Strengths: Steals
Offensive Strengths: Aggressiveness to the basket
Zach averages more than 15 points per game, and is among the top four players in the Coast Valley league in scoring and three-point shots.

Robert Poirier: Senior, 6'3"
Position: Forward
Defensive Strengths: Rebounding
Offensive Strengths: Screening and movement without ball
A first-year player, Robert averages more than four rebounds per game with an 80% field-goal percentage.

Grace Napier: Junior, 5'10"
Position: Guard
Defensive Strengths: Causing turnovers
Offensive Strengths: Screening and free-throw percentage
Grace has a 100% free-throw percentage this season.

Curtis Henry: Sophomore, 6'
Position: Guard
Defensive Strengths: Steals
Offensive Strengths: Fast break points
Curtis is one of the top-scorers on the team, averaging more than 12 per game.

What is the team's main goal for this season? To make CIF playoffs with a First or Second place seed in league.

What's been the most memorable moment of the season so far? In the January 19th game, we were down by 20+ points to VCA, and came back within 4 points of winning. The last two minutes we had only 4 players.

What's the biggest improvement you've seen since last season? Fast break points.

What school does the team most look forward to facing this year? NCC is always our rival. But Shandon kept us out of the playoffs last year by handing us a loss. They are a "must win" opponent.

What would you most like your players to learn from being a basketball player at CCS? To commit and work toward a goal even with tough odds. We have struggled to get enough players. The players we have now have committed to the team even when we were unsure we would have enough people to play. We are always the smallest team (by numbers) of any opponent. Also I'd like them to believe in themselves. Other teams look at us with concern. We play like underdogs. Our players are just a little too nice. :)
